Deputy Foreign Minister Meets IOM Delegation on Sidelines of Aswan Forum for Peace and Development

Cairo underscores early recovery support for Gaza and equitable burden-sharing in migration management

Misr Mubasher – October 22, 2025

On the sidelines of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, Ambassador Amr El-Sherbiny, Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, met with a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) led by Mohamed Abdiker, the organization’s Director of Operations and Emergencies.

During the meeting, El-Sherbiny expressed Egypt’s appreciation for its ongoing cooperation with the IOM in supporting national efforts to ensure a comprehensive approach to migration management.

He stressed that Egypt’s policy framework addresses the political, developmental, and humanitarian dimensions of migration alongside security considerations — in line with the Global Compact for Migration and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Deputy Minister voiced concern over the worsening humanitarian and political situation in neighboring countries, which continues to fuel rising flows of migrants and displaced people toward Egypt.

He noted that Egypt currently hosts around 10 million refugees and migrants, most of whom live in conditions close to full asylum status and have access to state-provided essential services, despite limited international support.

El-Sherbiny also underscored the importance of fair and sustainable burden- and responsibility-sharing, calling on the IOM to increase its technical and financial assistance to Egypt, particularly amid growing pressures linked to refugee hosting and combating irregular migration — all within the framework of Egypt’s National Strategy on Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue joint cooperation in supporting early recovery programs in Gaza, aimed at helping Palestinians remain on their land through the provision of urgent humanitarian aid, including shelter and essential supplies, following the ceasefire agreement signed in Sharm El-Sheikh last week.
