After Two Years, Egypt Strikes New Gas in Delta and Western Desert

Discoveries mark a boost for Egypt’s energy sector as new wells enter production phase soon.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, announced a series of new oil and gas discoveries in the Western Desert and the Nile Delta this month — marking the first new finds in nearly two years and reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional energy hub.

According to an official statement from the ministry, Dana Gas, the UAE-based energy company, made two natural gas discoveries in the Delta region — the Salami Delta-6 and Salami Ghazi-9 wells — which have been successfully added to the national production grid with a combined output of 19 million cubic feet per day.

In the Western Desert, Khalda Petroleum Company achieved several significant discoveries, including:

• WD 33X-1Y SHA-I3X well, producing 3,550 barrels of crude oil and 23 million cubic feet of gas per day.

• GH 65-A well, yielding around 500 barrels per day.

• GPU-1X well in the Abu Sennan area, with a production rate of 350 barrels per day.

The statement also revealed that Petrosanan Petroleum Company made a new oil discovery in East Alam El Shawish in the Western Desert through the HG34-H D1X well, with an initial output of around 1,000 barrels per day, which has already been connected to the national production grid.

Minister Badawi stated that these discoveries fall within the framework of Egypt’s national strategy to increase domestic energy output through the use of AI-powered exploration technologies and advanced geological analytics, helping the country move closer to energy self-sufficiency.

He added that, so far in 2025, Egypt has recorded 18 new discoveries — 13 in the Western Desert and five in the Delta — including 14 oil wells and four gas wells, highlighting the continued success of the petroleum sector in supporting national growth and strengthening the Egyptian economy.
