María Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

In a decision that resonated globally, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, honoring her role in uniting a fragmented opposition and continuing the struggle for democracy despite threats and political persecution.

Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes described her as “a unifying figure who brought together a deeply divided opposition and inspired millions through her call for free elections and true representation.” He added that her decision to remain in Venezuela, despite severe risks and living in hiding since the beginning of the year, was “a courageous choice that demonstrated rare bravery.”

Nobel’s Legacy

The Nobel Peace Prize remains the only Nobel awarded in Oslo, while the other prizes are announced in Stockholm. Earlier this week, prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature were unveiled, with the economics prize to follow on Monday.

For many Venezuelans, Machado’s win represents more than personal recognition. It is viewed as global acknowledgment of their ongoing struggle and a renewed sign that their fight for democracy is still on the world’s
