The football world was struck by renewed shock and concern after Denmark national team star Christian Eriksen (34) collapsed on the pitch during an international friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine in the Danish city of Odense. The incident immediately brought back memories of the dramatic collapse he suffered during UEFA Euro 2020.
Eriksen appeared in his usual composed and influential form before the match, displaying the leadership and focus for which he is known. However, his sudden collapse during the game sparked concern among fans and football followers around the world.

In the 65th minute of the match, with Denmark leading 2-1, the experienced midfielder was seen clutching his chest before suddenly collapsing onto the turf.
Medical personnel rushed onto the field to provide immediate treatment, while players from both teams formed a protective circle around him to shield the scene from cameras and spectators.
The referee subsequently halted and abandoned the match, and Eriksen was transported to hospital for urgent medical examinations. Denmark head coach Brian Riemer later confirmed that the player remained conscious while leaving the field and even waved to his teammates to reassure them.
Eriksen Reassures Fans: “I Am Fine”
Christian Eriksen wasted no time in reassuring his supporters, leaving the hospital and returning home less than 24 hours after the incident.
In a message posted on his official Instagram account, he wrote:
“I want everyone to know that I am fine and back home with my family. As you can imagine, receiving a shock from my implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was a significant experience for both me and my family. However, I want to reassure everyone that this situation was completely different from what happened in 2021.”
Eriksen also expressed his deep gratitude to his teammates, the medical staff who responded quickly, and the specialists who have monitored his heart condition over the years. He emphasized that his implanted cardiac device functioned exactly as intended and protected him during the critical moment.
He added that his current focus is on making a full recovery, spending time with his family, enjoying his break, and playing with his children.
Doctors Explain the Role of the Cardiac Device
Denmark national team physician Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen lost consciousness only briefly on the pitch. However, the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) responded immediately and successfully restored his heart’s normal rhythm.
The doctor stated that Eriksen is in stable condition and remains in good spirits. He also noted that the medical team is providing psychological support and assistance to other members of the Denmark squad and coaching staff following the distressing incident.
The Device That Saved Eriksen’s Life
Christian Eriksen suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland at the UEFA European Championship in June 2021, in what became one of the most emotional moments in modern football history.
Following that incident, he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor heart rhythms and automatically intervene in the event of a dangerous cardiac abnormality.
Although Italian football regulations prevented him from continuing his career with Inter Milan while using the device, Eriksen successfully returned to professional football with Brentford in 2022. He later enjoyed a successful three-season spell with Manchester United, demonstrating his determination to overcome adversity and compete at the highest level once again.
