El-Sisi Guest of Honor at European Dinner as Brussels Hosts First Egypt–EU Summit

The first Egypt–European Union summit convenes in Brussels to discuss strategic partnership and Middle East challenges
Misr Mubasher – October 21, 2025
The Belgian capital Brussels is hosting the first-ever summit between Egypt and the European Union, with the participation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside several leaders and heads of government from EU member states.
The summit will be followed by an informal dinner hosted by the European Council in honor of President El-Sisi — a gesture that reflects the depth of relations between the two sides and highlights Egypt’s pivotal role in the Middle East and North Africa.
The summit focuses on deepening political and economic cooperation between Egypt and the European Union under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in March 2024.
Discussions will cover key areas including energy, trade, security, migration, and sustainable development, in addition to major international and regional issues such as the situation in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and multilateral cooperation.
European Council President António Costa said in an official statement published on the Council’s website:
“Egypt is a strategic partner for the European Union — a relationship rooted in shared history, geography, and culture. The EU highly values Egypt’s role in promoting stability in the Middle East and its mediation efforts in the Gaza crisis.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen added that the summit represents “an opportunity to deepen cooperation and unlock the full potential of bilateral relations based on shared interests.”
The Dinner: Symbolism and Significance
According to the European Council’s statement, the summit’s program concludes with an informal dinner bringing together European heads of state and government alongside President El-Sisi. The setting will provide an open diplomatic space to exchange views on current regional and global developments.
The dinner is seen as a symbolic European gesture, reaffirming Egypt’s position as a key partner on Middle Eastern, energy, and regional security issues
Background of the Partnership
In March 2024, Cairo and Brussels agreed to elevate their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, structured around six main pillars:
political relations, economic stability, trade and investment, migration and mobility, security, and human development.
The agreement stipulates that a summit between both sides will be held every two years, alongside an annual Partnership Council to monitor implementation.
The European Union remains Egypt’s largest trading partner, accounting for 22% of Egypt’s total foreign trade in 2024. Egyptian exports to the EU represented 26.5%, while imports from EU countries stood at 19.9%.
Observers believe that the timing of the summit reflects growing European recognition of Egypt’s regional balancing role, particularly amid escalating crises in the Middle East.
The summit also aims to boost economic cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen, priority sectors for both sides in the coming phase.
While Cairo seeks to attract new European investments, the European Union views Egypt as a strategic anchor of stability and trade in the Mediterranean.
According to the European Council’s official website, the summit will be held biennially, strengthening institutional cooperation between the two sides.
This step marks the beginning of a new phase in Egypt–EU relations, with expectations that the summit will lead to expanded understandings on energy, trade, and regional security, as well as a deeper political dialogue between Cairo and Brussels
